Gbèdu: An Afro-Jazz Orchestral Experience

Where African rhythm meets jazz harmony and orchestral scale. A live experience rooted in culture, community, and the power of collective sound.

The Experience

More than a concert.

The name draws from Yoruba cultural memory: a celebration, a gathering, a moment when community and sound become one. Gbèdu is King Udofia's flagship live experience — African rhythmic traditions, jazz harmony, and orchestral scale fused into one room.

At its core, Gbèdu is not a genre exercise. It is a living conversation between continents.

The ensemble brings together 20+ musicians under King's direction as composer, arranger, and conductor. Each performance is architected for immersion.

Audiences experience Gbèdu as more than a concert. It is ceremony and celebration.

The Sound

African Rhythmic Traditions

The foundation of Gbèdu lies in polyrhythm — layered percussion, call-and-response patterns, and the kinetic energy of West African musical ceremony. Djembe, congas, and auxiliary percussion drive the pulse, creating a rhythmic architecture that is both ancient and urgently alive.

Jazz Harmony & Improvisation

Jazz provides the harmonic language — extended chords, modal interchange, and space for improvisation. Horn sections and rhythm section interact with the freedom of jazz while remaining anchored to King's compositional vision. Soloists emerge from the ensemble, then return to the collective.

Orchestral Scale

Strings and expanded instrumentation give Gbèdu its cinematic scope. The full ensemble — 20+ musicians — creates moments of overwhelming beauty and power. Orchestration is not decoration; it is the vehicle through which cultural conversation reaches its fullest expression.
