About King

King Udofia studio portrait for biography section

Nigerian-Canadian. Composer. Conductor. Storyteller.

King Udofia is a Nigerian-Canadian composer, arranger, conductor, music director, and artist. Born from a lineage rich in cultural tradition, King grew up in a world where music was never just entertainment it was memory, ceremony, identity, and community.

Formally trained in jazz composition and orchestration, he has developed a rare ability to move fluidly between genres from classical orchestration to Afrobeat, jazz, gospel, and film scoring while always maintaining a clear, culturally grounded artistic voice.

Over the course of his career, King has collaborated with artists and institutions including Disney Animation, Calgary Stampede, Titilope Sonuga, Femi Leye, the Calgary Jazz Orchestra, Johnny Summers, and Ethnic Festivals Calgary.

In 2026, he created and produced Gbèdu a sold-out Afro-jazz orchestral experience that marked a milestone moment in Calgary's cultural landscape and established King as a distinctive voice in Canadian music.

Philosophy

Music should serve the moment, not the ego.

King approaches every project with one central question: what does this moment need? Not what sounds impressive, not what shows off technique but what will most fully serve the story, the emotion, the audience, and the artist.

He believes in the power of music to connect people across difference, to preserve culture, and to create space for something true. That conviction shapes every note he writes, every ensemble he leads, and every collaboration he enters.

Craft and culture are inseparable in King's work. The technical precision of Western formal training and the spiritual depth of African oral tradition are not opposites they are conversation partners. His music exists in that conversation.
